Birthday Reframe: Trading Control for Self-Kindness, with Dr. Jessie Mahoney

Somewhere between your last board recert and your last IVF cycle, you probably stopped asking yourself what you're proud of. Most of us do.

This week, Dr. Jessie Mahoney and I sat down for a birthday conversation - hers and mine - about the year behind us and the one ahead. Jessie is a pediatrician-turned-physician coach, the voice behind Pause & Presence, and someone I trust enough to be unfiltered with. This episode is the result.

We didn't plan a tidy takeaway. We planned to talk like two doctors who've spent a year learning the hard way that control and self-kindness rarely coexist — and that one of them usually has to go.

In this episode, we get into:

  • What we're each most proud of from the past year - and why pausing to actually notice pride is its own practice, not a given

  • Jessie's TED× Talk, "What Would Love Do" - and what it really took to get there

  • Surrender as something you feel in your body, not just something you think your way into

  • ‍‍Why rest is uncomfortable even for the people who teach it professionally

  • and why that discomfort doesn't make it wrong

  • The lesson that came with a stress fracture (Jessie's) and a spinal fracture (mine): your body will make you rest if you won't do it yourself

    Give it a listen.

You can find Jessie at jessiemahoneymd.com and on Instagram at @jessiemahoneymd.

A woman with stage IV cancer told Jessie something two days before she died that neither of us has stopped thinking about since. We won't spoil it here - but it's the thread the whole conversation pulls on.

You can catch the full conversation above or on your favorite podcast platform.

    With Love and Science,

    💜 Dr. Erica

P.S. If this year has asked more of you than you had to give, you're not the only physician in that position - and you don't have to sort it out alone. Book a discovery call here, and let's talk about what's actually possible for you. I'd love to connect.
