The Invisible Patient: Supporting Men Through Fertility Treatment, with Dr. James Kuan

Male factor infertility accounts for nearly half of all infertility cases in heterosexual couples. And yet your partner's workup is still often an afterthought- scheduled late, discussed rarely, and often treated merely like a sign out check box.

This week I sat down with Dr. James Kuan, a board certified urologist with more than twenty years of experience in men's sexual health, founder and CEO of Sexual Medicine for Men in Seattle, and medical director of the Seattle Sperm Bank. It's a candid conversation about the partner who's often standing quietly on the sidelines and what happens when we finally bring him into the process.

This one is for couples navigating fertility treatment together and especially for the male partner who's been struggling quietly without support.

You can listen to the full episode HERE.

In this episode:

  • The parking lot moment: what happens when a male partner can't produce a sample on retrieval day, and why it's more common than anyone admits

  • New onset erectile dysfunction shows up in a meaningful percentage of men during fertility treatment and simply naming it as normal resolves it for many, without the need for medication

  • The case for REIs prescribing Viagra during treatment: it's safe, doesn't negatively affect sperm, and reduces a barrier to care

  • Why the male workup should be completed in parallel with the female workup

  • The 2 to 4 day abstinence window before a sample and how there may be more flexibility than we realize

  • How central these issues are to a man's sense of identity during this process and how we can give him and his partner back their power

If any of this sounds familiar, give this episode a listen. Find Dr. James Kuan on InstagramFacebook, or his newsletter at sexafterretirement.com.

It's okay for this process to be imperfect.

Progress not perfection. 💜
